Directly From Montreal And In His Living Room.
Osheaga Music Festival in Montreal was something more this year. With a banquet-baba worthy headliners - The Replacements, Lorde, Jack White and OutKast - there was a variety of attendees flooding Parc Jean Drapeau every day. Highlights included Skrillex Friday, Childish Gambino, and ATLiens aformentioned. Saturday boasted stellar performances by Modest Mouse, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, and Mr. third man himself. While Sunday saw young monsters Lorde and Arctic Monkeys closing the festival below.
A good time was probably for many heads came when the star of New Zealand paid tribute to neighboring Replacements his redux of "Party Swingin '". Moody interpretation was but one highlight of an iconic and stylish set that was actually quite humiliating. Towards the end, Lorde reflected on how far he has come since last year and sincerely thank everyone for being part of "the time of your life." I can confidently say that the feeling was mutual. I could not do? Relive the following weekend.

Montreal From A To Z: O Is For Osheaga
Not even distance can keep Meaghan Tardif-Bennett attend Osheaga. The 22-year-old Concordia student is on an exchange in Germany, but she is struggling to raise funds for quick return, especially to attend your favorite music and arts festival in Montreal. In the past five years, Tardif-Bennett has camped on each day of Osheaga to ensure premium access to some of the best known music talent, including Coldplay, Arcade Fire and Macklemore.
"It's times like those still alive," she said. "I feel like the entire island of Montreal he meets, beating like a heartbeat. Though the crowd fades after a show, we all walk together singing, singing, music lover and we had just experienced. This is unreal”.
For music fans, there's nothing quite like Osheaga. It's where up-and-coming Canadian talents mix with heavyweight’s mainstream. When, a few years ago by local bands The Barr Brothers played in the same place as Eminem. When, in August, Hey Rosetta! Will shake out with Jack White.
Between August 1 and 3, it is expected that an estimated 135,000 people in shorts and fringed boots gladiator down on Parc Jean-Drapeau on a musical journey that evokes comparisons Coachella and Lollapalooza.
And like their counterparts in the U.S., Osheaga attracts its fair share of out-of-towners. Last year, 65 percent of those attending the festival - or nearly 88,000 people - came from outside Quebec. Among them was Malorie Bertrand.
Last August, Bertrand, along with three of his friends and family, pass between Ottawa and Montreal were opened in a two-hour trip that was years in the making. Bertrand first on Osheaga in 2009, but it was hard for her to find a group to go with. Schedules do not always align people and money was sometimes tight. Then last year, everything fell into place and Bertrand could not have been happier with time.
"It was probably one of the best years ahead," said the 28-year-old communications officer of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. "The line was so diverse and full of talented acts."
Among the highlights were Mumford & Sons and Explosions in the Sky (Bertrand has been a fan of the band of American post-rock since it appeared on the soundtrack of the film Friday Night Lights.)
But more than music, Osheaga also about art and fashion, a look that Bertrand, a stylist part time, I wanted to explore. Dressed in a loose sleeveless racerback tank and jean shorts, Bertrand remained neutral and comfortable while taking pictures in stylish 20-somethings for Blog Ottawa Magazine.
"The events are always a good excuse to play with your style," he said, adding that many of the people he met had cute and functional teams as tops and shorts bohemian fringe.
If you feel disturbed by the image of thousands of party loving hipsters, do not. Osheaga enthusiasts insist that there is a way for all personality types to enjoy the festivities. Apart from the main dance areas in front of the steps, there is plenty of green space for relaxing music fans and families with young children to relax, sunbathe and sing along with the music.
MJ Lafleche plans to do just that. In the first Osheaga attended, in 2006, he was a teenager Lafleche rocking to Sonic Youth. Now at 24, the Starbucks barista calls itself "grumpy-old lady" when it comes to crowds. She will still be at Osheaga this August to see Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Modest Mouse perform. And still anticipates complain of having to push through crowds. But Lafleche would not have it any other way.

Shake It Up At Osheaga, The Place Of Shaking Hands
MONTREAL In retrospect, seems obvious - bring together some of the best bands in the world in the middle of summer, to carry out on an island across the river from Montreal, with the city skyline as a backdrop.
But it was only eight years ago that Nick Farkas organized the first Osheaga , a festival that is growing in popularity and has developed a reputation as a music destination in North America .
"It was not so evident in the early years, when he was not doing well," Farkas said in an interview.
“Now it looks like a brilliant move.”
The festival is held every August in Jean -Drapeau Park on Île Sainte -Hélène , an island in the St. Lawrence , better known as the site of amusement park La Ronde , and before that the world fair Expo 67 . It is a short subway ride bike from the city center.
“We wanted to create a microcosm of Montrealness on the island with good food, art, music," Farkas said.
About 25,000 people attended the inaugural two-day event in 2006.
Now spread over three days, the festival attracts 45,000 every day and has been sold in the past two years. Seems about to do it again this summer.
This year, from August 1 to 3, the headliners include Jack White, the hip-hop duo Outkast, English rockers Arctic Monkeys, the dark and gloomy songwriter Nick Cave, and Swedish pop star Lykke Li.
The festival has been compared to a scaled-down version of Coachella, the great festival held annually in the California desert.
“It has the same kind of feeling, when you walk on the ground," said Christopher Roberts, director of Toronto’s own popular music and arts festival, NXNE, Osheaga has visited several times.
"It's in a field on a beautiful island in the middle of Montreal, which is just an amazing city.”
While NXNE spans two weekends and features hundreds of events in clubs and theaters in the city, Roberts said Osheaga has a more intimate atmosphere.
“Osheaga is a first time event that occurs in one place and not have this kind of really magical environment, because you're all participating in this unique event together , it really creates this sense of community. "
The “Osheaga, “word the story goes was used by the first European settlers to describe what would become Montreal. Mohawk was originally a word to describe the place "where people gathered to shake hands.”
In these days, where over 100 bands are lined up to perform.
Local talent - as Half -Moon Run, Mac DeMarco, and Le Trouble - will be presented by major international acts.
Osheaga sets are shorter, which makes it easy to discover new bands.
Emerging artists play for 30 minutes, while the headliners finish each day with games that extend over an hour and a half.
There are six stages this year, compared to the previous five years, together with showcases for the visual arts.
One reason for the growth of the party, which is led by the entertainment promoter Evenko are their hosting packages.
They range from the most affordable rooms in the residence halls of the city offers some of the high end hotels in the city.
Farkas said that part of the appeal of Osheaga is that you can combine with a summer trip to Montreal.
A three-day pass for the event starts at $ 250 and goes up to $ 950 for those seeking VIP benefits. Packages that include travel, accommodation, along with tickets starting at $ 424.

Arctic Monkeys: Rock quartet from Sheffield, led by Alex Turner, remains one of the greatest acts of England - last year led the massive Glastonbury festival, and recently copped the first prize at the Brit Awards, including best group British and best British album - although not the same level of success approaches in North America, a fairly common phenomenon experienced by the main events in the UK.

Lorde : The teen singer and songwriter from New Zealand stormed the charts in 2013 with their infectious single Royals , their debut album, pure heroin , which was preceded a year earlier by an EP , The Love Club. The 17 - year-old , whose real name is Ella Yelich -O'Connor , was nominated for four Grammy Awards this year , winning two , for song of the year and best pop solo performance (for both the Royals ) .
The Replacements: One of the most beloved bands of the 1980s alternative rock, the band released seven studio albums during its initial run of 12 years - has been brief, intermittent meetings since then - none of which sold particularly well, but his discography is regularly cited as a key influence on the grunge movement, which began in earnest shortly after the Replacements disbanded in 1991.
